ABOUT COOK ISLANDS - TRANSPORT & COMMUNICATIONS
On Rarotonga and Aitutaki it is possible to access all modern communications, including a mobile phone network and internet services, but services are not so available on the outer islands.
Car rental, bus and taxi services are available on the main islands. Drivers need a local driving licence, which can be bought from the police station upon presentation of a valid driver's licence.
There are only two main roads on Rarotonga, but one is the historical Ara Metua inland road that dates back to 1000 AD. The other is the modern Ara Tapu, which circumnavigates the island. Of the 187 kilometres of road on Rarotonga, only 35 km are paved.
Air Rarotonga operates regular scheduled flights from Rarotonga to eight of the other islands in the southern and northern Cook Islands. Charters are also available on a request basis and Air Rarotonga provides a number of excellent daytrips around the islands. The airline normally employs Brazilian twin-engined prop-jet aircraft (Embraer Bandeirantes) for its services.
TELECOMMUNICATIONS:
International Telephone, Facsimile, E-mail, Internet connections and services are available 24 hours from the telecommunications office (Telecom Cook Islands) in the main township of Avarua. Most accommodation properties have IDD facilities.
Mail and telegrams are available from the Post Office, open Monday to Friday 8:00am to 4:00pm.
