NEW ZEALAND RETIREMENT
New Zealand (Aotearea) lies in the South Pacific Ocean, 1600 km east of Australia. It is made up of the North and South Islands and a number of smaller islands. NZ has a total area of 268,000 sq km.
NZ's landscape consists of hill country and mountain ranges, of which one of the most beautiful is the Southern Alps in South Island. This island is also reknowned for its fiords, glaciers and lakes with the coastal plains of Canterbury and Southland adding to the variety of the South Island scenery. The North Island is well-known for its volcanic region centred around Rotorua and typified by its hot springs, mud pools, and geysers. It is also the location of NZ's largest lake, Lake Taupo, and most of the country's active volcanoes - Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe and Tongariro.
